We've been talking about doing some tameshigiri in the dojo for the first time, just as soon as we get some money for the mats. The mats aren't that expensive, it's the shipping that costs! I've linked to some tournament batto (cutting) videos. Notice how meaty the katana are that they're using, and the good techniques. You may also notice that some have antique tsuba on their katana as well.
Watching closely, you should be able to note who's good, and who's really good.
